Dog-Friendly Hiking Trails

Looking to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city with your furry friend? Here is a list of dog-friendly hikes that offer incredible views of the Salt Lake valley.

Neff’s Canyon

Neff’s Canyon is a 6.2 mile out-and-back trail that starts at the parking lot for White Park. You and Fido will enjoy this trail through wildflowers that climbs to a meadow about 3 miles into the hike. However, if you are just looking for a quick getaway, you can choose to hike just half a mile up to the river. Your pup will love wading in the cool mountain water on a hot summer day.

Once you reach the gravel trails of Memory Grove, you can unleash your pup. This 2.1 mile out and back trail has a gradual incline, shade and a fun creek to play in.

Bonneville Shoreline Trail

Bonneville Shoreline Trail (BST) offers a wide variety of activities like hiking, mountain biking, trail running and more. You can take this trail as far as you’d like up to the 9.1 mile endpoint. Or connect to hundreds of miles of trails by heading south to Draper and catch sweeping views of Sandy and Draper homes. Bonneville Shoreline boasts a short distance to get a breathtaking view of the city. Just be sure to stay below BST and out of protected watershed areas.

Heugh’s Canyon

At only 2 miles round trip, this hike is a great option if you have a city dog that is not used to walking long distances. This heavily forested trail provides adequate shade for a comfortable walk in the summer heat. Also, the stream that runs along this trail is sure to keep your pup cool! A rewarding waterfall view marks the turnaround point of this beautiful hike.

Leash?: Dogs are allowed off leash once they reach the gravel trail head. There is a 0.4 mile walk through a neighborhood before reaching the trail head. Please be sure to leash your pup on this part of the walk and (as always) bring poop bags to clean up after your furry friend!

Millcreek Canyon

Millcreek Canyon is home to several dog friendly hikes such as Dog Lake, Desolation Trail, Mt. Olympus, and more. Dogs are allowed off leash on odd numbered days but must remain on leash on even numbered days. There is a $3 use fee to access these trails and is payable as you are exiting the canyon.
