Floating the Jordan River
Floating the Jordan River
If you’re looking for fun near Salt Lake City you’ll find one of our treasures hidden right in the middle of the valley. Did you know you can Kayak down the Jordan RIver?
The Jordan River runs 51 miles between Utah Lake and the great salt lake. Don’t think you have to do the full distance if you’re looking for a fun afternoon on the river.
How to float the Jordan River
What do you need to float the Jordan River?
1. Safety First! Wear an appropriate life jacket (PFD)
2. A Plan. Check the map and plan a route.
Here is the map that gives the locations of all launch ramps and hazards.
There are multiple hazards and loading ramps. Plan a route here that will fit an appropriate amount of time. It is a good strategy to leave a car at the end of the route so you don’t have to walk back!
Below you can see a picture of the interactive map linked above.
3. A flotation Device
The Jordan river is a calm river that is relatively shallow that can be navigated in most personal watercraft. You can use a Kayak, small raft, intertube, or canoe.

Authors Recommendation
My favorite short route for first-timers begins at the Jordan River rotary park. There is plenty of parking and a very accessible launch ramp. (The real step one is to drop a car off at the Shiends Lane Park)
I then stop at Shields Lane Park where I parked a second car.
This route is about 5 miles and should take about an hour to complete.
